Will Oxford be hiring any new police officers this year?

Geoff Henry said...

We do not anticipate hiring new fulltime officers however; we hope to offer new officer tests in the near future. We are always in need of part time officers.- Comment by Mayor Henry

Great Site lots of good information.

I understand Oxford scheduled two separate police exams recently. Will notice be mailed when the next phase of the process will take place and are applications being processed for part time police officers? Thank You

Geoff Henry said...

The candidates who passed the written exam in December 2007 will be contacted to complete the physical agility exam in April.

Annonomys said...

Do you have a special victims unit?

Geoff Henry said...

The OPD does not have a Special Victims Unit. If needed, we would use the the Chestr County Detectives. Thank you for your inquiry.

How can I can keep teenagers from loitering near my house on Penn Avenue? They hang out at the Getty Mart, although there is a sign there that says "no loitering". Clearly, the Citgo across the street does not have this same problem, so I have to assume it's a problem that only Getty management can solve. What do you suggest we do to ensure that this law is properly enforced? Thanks for your time and the work that you do.

Geoff Henry said...

Gonzo:
The difference between the two locations is the ownership. The owners at the Getty Mart are not terribly interested in the loitering problem. My suggestion is that you call 911 and report the problem. Police officers will be dispatched.
Thank you.

Was a physical agility test scheduled for applicants that passed the written police test in December 2007 as your previous response indicates? Is the town discontinuing the hiring process? If so do you plan on reimbursing the applicants the exam fee?

Geoff Henry said...

The physical agility test will be scheduled in the next 30 days for applicants who passed the written test. The Borough has not suspended the hiring process.

I think the Oxford police do a wonderful job. I am especially impressed by Officers Coverly, Deever and Devlin. Kudos!!!

Thank you for your kind comment about the three officers. I will mention it to them. All of our police work hard to protect the safety of residents and visitors.

I see the Oxford Police Department has added police staff. Are these full time or part time police officers?

Geoff Henry said...

I have a question concerning harassment. My minor daughter has been receiving verbal and written (via internet) harassment by an adult. What can I legally do about this?

Geoff Henry said...

I encourage you to contact either Chief Slauch or Sgt McFadden immediately to discuss your issue. You may also contact me at oxfordmayor@zoominternet.net.
Thank you.

I think someone should check into the unsafe conditions at the Nottingham school parking area in the mornings aropund 8:30. They have people entering on the exit side and have people driving around the parking lot waaaay too fast. I have complained to the school several times and conditions are getting worse instead of better. The afternoons are no where near as bad. I would hate to see a child hurt or worse.

Geoff Henry said...

Thank you for your concern. The Chief has been working on this issue and has asked the school prinicipal to mention it in the next newsletter. Borough Council on 3/16/09 approved the placement of No Stopping, Parking and Standing Signs pending approval by the Borough Solicitor. This will allow the police to ticket offenders.

I would like to say "THANK YOU" for the new stop sign at Broad and 4th Streets. I feel it has made the Broad Street area a safer neighborhood.

What are the odds of getting 4th Street between Hodgson and Market Streets cleaned up a bit?

Extraneous trash and debris can easily be seen in front and back of some of the properties. I feel that these properties and the Getty Mart generate a good amount of trash in the Borough of Oxford.

The Oxford Police have done a great job with monitoring meandering teenagers. THANK YOU!!

Geoff Henry said...

Thank you for your comment. I have forwarded it to the Chief, the Borough Manager and Borough Council.

I am a resident of Sycamore Crossing. I have spoken with several nieghbors and we are all noticing quality of life issues that are negatively impacting the once pleasant neighborhood. I realize that the police cannot enforce speeding because the development is not dedicated. We pay the same taxes as all other borough residents, but do not receive the majority of services that all residents do. I have seen a speed sign that the police placed on the roads, but have never seen it in this development. Is it possible to have this device placed in Sycamore Crossing?

Most importantly, the obscene vehicle noise is making the peace and quiet we once had, a thing of the past. Car stereos are so loud that it makes our homes shake. Certain vehicles are also driving through with after market mufflers that are extremely loud and obnoxious. These vehicles are residents and others who travel the development from Rt. 472. Is this type of nuisance a crime?? We hope and pray that something can be done.

Anonymous said...

Is there anything the police can do about the vehicles with loud mufflers and loud radios that travel through the Sycamore Crossing Development? The problem has recently become much worse. Isn't there any laws that prohibit this annoyance?

Geoff Henry said...

I have forwarded your concern to the Chief and he will increase patrols. Is there a specifice time period when this occurs?

Geoff Henry said...

The Chief has been asked to place the speed sign. Please let me know if you do not see it in the next week.

What can be done to enforce the speed limit on Locust Street? There are way too many speeders using it as a launching pad.

Geoff Henry said...

Thank you for your post. I will speak to the Chief and he will share your concern with the officers.

Thank you to Mayor Henry for walking away from a diner with your family to assist me with a drug arrest until back up units could arrive. Thanks again for getting involved in our community. Officer Coverly.

My wife and I moved here (Sycamore Crossing) to get away from the noise and inconsiderate neighbors that permeated our neighborhood in Delaware county. Now we have neighbors that let their dogs bark all hours of the day and night. Last night it was 10.30pm before they finally let them in. Is there any kind of ordinance in the borough that can prevent this type of rude behavior?

Geoff Henry said...

There is a nuisance ordinance in the Borough. If the situation happens again, call the non emergency number 610-268-3171 and ask that an officer be dispatched. If this does not help, please email me at oxfordmayor@zoominternet.net.
Thank you.

I can not agree more with the last post. Today(Sunday) these same rude people allowed the dogs outside to start their daily annoying barking at 6:15am. For some reason during the week they allow it to begin at 7:15am. We don't want to bother the police since we don't know if they are busy at the time. Is there anyway an officer, when they are not busy, can park near the intersection of Manchester and Beaumont during these times and see for themself? It will be obvious to find the German Shepard who is causing this along with a small mixed dog. They are left to run around a fenced in yard and the house is on the corner. This is really getting old and we need help. Thanks

Geoff Henry said...

Thank you for your post. I encourage you to call the police to report the barking dog problem. This is a quality of life issue that should be addressed.

I lived in a township outside of Charlotte NC before moving to Oxford. Our police department had a citizen alert email system that residents could sign up for, it alerted residents of suspects on the loose, particular incidents of vandalism in an area, or road closures, etc. This afternoon I came across a story that a man was being sought in my area this morning. I believe with today's technology a citizens alert program is a fairly simply way to alert residents and provide community timely information. Perhaps it could even be accomplished with a facebook page. Just a suggestion. Thank you for your service.

Geoff Henry said...

We do have an alert system. You can register for alerts at www.nixle.com

Mr. Mayor, I am writting because I have a concern for the crossing guards on 5th Street during the Elementary dismissals. I traveled through today at approx 3:10pm (before dismissal) I came across a female crossing guard stopping traffic traveling on 5th street to allow merging vehicles to enter the intersection. I went to make a right turn and this crossing guard almost jumped in front of my vehicle and yelled at me to STOP!

Due to her actions I was almost struck by the vehicle behind me. I didn't understand, I had the right of way and my signal was on. I stopped and asked the woman who gave her the right to stop traffic your only suspose to cross children, she yelled and me with my family inside the vehicle, "the chief of police". Well unfortunately, I am a retired police officer from PA and I immediately advised her that the PA State Transportation Code says otherwise.

As cited CHAPTER 101. AUTHORIZING APPROPRIATELY ATTIRED
PERSONS TO DIRECT, CONTROL OR REGULATE TRAFFIC
§ 101.2. Persons authorized to direct traffic.
-The following persons are authorized to direct, control or regulate traffic:

(1) Traffic control persons on utility, maintenance or construction projects.

(2) Adult school crossing guards for assisting school children across busy or hazardous highways.

As indicated ONLY TO ASSIST CHILDREN. They can't direct traffic to let the buses out or in this case stop traffic to let merging cars enter the roadway.

I know they only want to help but I think this practice has become more of a hazard then helping. I continued my travel and found a crossing guard in the middle of the road in front of Jordon Banks School again directing traffic. I had to swerve around him to avoid hitting him with my car.

I am compassionate and understand their need to want to help he flow of traffic go smoothly but again I feel they are creating a traffic hazard and would be beside myself to learn one has been injured due to these common practices.

I understand the boro and the school district share the cost but since this person cited the Chief of Police as being the issuing authority, I wanted to bring it to your attention before someone gets injured.

Thank You

Geoff Henry said...

Dear RetPolice:
Thank you for your post. Section 1127 of the Borough Code of Pennsylvania allows for Borough Council at the request of the school district, to appoint school crossing guards who shall have the duty of controlling and directing traffic at or near schools and who shall be in suitable and distinctive clothes. While on duty the crossing guards shall be under the direct supervision of the Mayor. They shall serve at the pleasure of Borough Council.

The residents of Sycamore Crossing would like to thank you for placing a speed trailer in our development. Most vehicles that pass thru are people using the development as a short cut. There have been numerous near accidents and we hope that you will begin to enforce the speed limit now that over half of the development has been dedicated. The trailer was out last Friday and was effective for the two hours that it worked. Since then it has not displayed anything and is apparently dead. More troubling is the fact that it is now Thursday and the police, that hopefully drive past, have not noticed this..Please fix this problem and help us make this development a safer place to live. Thank you
