I just moved to Oxford and I am pleased with the town's Police Department. All the men and woman do a wonderful job keeping this town safe and clean. Thank you for your commitment.

Thank you for your comment. Our officers work hard to keep the Borough safe for residents and visitors.

I'm a retired Phila. Police officer who just moved to the Oxford area about 3 months ago. Since then I've seen several drug transactions, speak easies(illegal sales of alcohol) and a good amount of people carrying concealed firearms(which I doubt have permits to carry). OPD officers are either blind , lack the training and/or experience or just plain don't care. I like it here and would like to stay. But if I wanted to see big city dilemas I could go back to the city.

Thank you for your comment. The Chief and I would welcome the opportunity to discuss your concerns. Please contact either of us.

I am a police officer in Cecil County and had occasion to work with the OPD in the past. I also do all my shopping in Oxford and feel the officers of the OPD are very professional and extremely visible. I really like the fact that I see officers walking a foot beat in the downtown area in the evenings. You don't see this type of policing too much anymore and I feel it is very valuable to the quality of life in any jurisdiction. Your officer's should be commended for their dedication and professionalism.

i have been in the Oxford for 3 yrs now. and there have been 4 or 5 times when things have gone on outside my home. When i have approached the officers. i have been kindly told to return to my home that they were investigating... then i try to look in the paper and your site to find out what is going on and nada zip... how am i to feel safe in my own home, if i don't know what to watch for? can you give me some insight on how to find out??

Geoff Henry said...

Generally speaking, when the Police are involved in an "active"
incident or investigation, the Officers involved are not in a position to
answer questions from neighbors and bystanders who have no vested interest
in the immediate situation. You will be told to return to your residence
and/or to leave the area. As to the issue of "feeling safe in your home",
we will take all appropriate measures to notify you (and the entire
Community, if necessary) if the incident or investigation warrants that
response or action. As far as reading about the incident in the paper, we
do submit "News Releases" on a weekly basis. However, we have no control
over that which the "paper" chooses to print.

It is interesting to me that an elementary school in the borough was completely locked down on Wednesday because of a safety concern and the police were not notified. As a parent, taxpayer and resident of the borough, I am not happy!

Geoff Henry said...

My suggestion is you contact the School District's Administration for a comment.

This blog is great... I found what the retired Philly police officer wrote just below to be quite funny. Everyone's moving to Oxford from the cities so the big city problems are being brought along with them.
I feel like a common idea that many "transplants" have, is that they are going to move to Oxford and show those "country bumpkins" how to live. "Transplants" love to complain about the Amish too, i believe the Amish are the only thing that makes my home state really unique.

I will be composing a email to both the Chief of Police and Mayor in the next day. It is outlining improper actions by one of the officers. This was witnessed by several employees in a public store. This exchange took place when one of your officers approached a correctional officer who was shopping in the store. The officer was more then over the top with the gentleman. I will also forward the same email to the Chester County Human resource department as the Correction Officer exampled a professional behavior, when dealing with the Oxford Pd

Geoff Henry said...

Thank you anonymous for your comment. Once the Chief and I receive your email I assure you it will be thoroughly investigated.

Is there a way for members of the community to get information on police activity in the Borough? The Oxford Tribune used to carry information pertaining to crimes, but it is no longer in circulation. The "Police Blotter" on the Oxford PD website lists activity for August 2009, but no more current entries. How can I obtain this type of information? Thank You

Geoff Henry said...

Thank you for your comment. I will update the Police Blotter. If you look on the News page of the web site, you will get an over view of the amount of activity the police are involved in. Also, I encourage you to register at www.nixle.com to get update community and public safety alerts through email or text messages. This service is free.

I believe that the OPD is doing a fantastic job! The town seems peaceful, but of course there are some few "bad apples". I'm sure they will be taken care of in time.

Keep up the good work!

Geoff Henry said...

JD: Thank you for your comment. The men and women of the OPD work hard day after day to keep us safe.

thanks for your time
Frank

Ive just read an article which states that 15 officers from PA which includes an OPD officer of having his police powers(certification) revoked. If thats true, if so any moving violation and or arrests from this officer are they considered illegal.

Geoff Henry said...

Thank you for your post. Any moving violations cited by this officer prior to his termination from the OPD are valid.

Will the Oxford Police be patroling the new Walmart?

Geoff Henry said...

As of right now, there is no agreement with either Lower Oxford or the developer and the Borough to patrol the new Walmart.

Thanks to the Oxford PD for all they do! A comment and request: the comment, to echo another poster's comments (on this board or another). While I appreciate the work of the crossing guards on 5th Street during school hours, at least one (5th & Broad) is FAR too aggressive. He responds angrily to drivers who are following his instructions. I know these are likely volunteers, but the response is disproportionate to the behavior of drivers. Secondly, as someone who walks his child to school every morning, it would be great to see a daily presence of the police in the 5th/6th Street & Broad/Hodgson areas. Drivers routinely roll through these stop signs, and my child and I have come close to being struck on more than one occasion. There has been a patrol presence, but not enough to curb this behavior. Thanks in advance!

Geoff Henry said...

Thank you for your post, your comment and concern. I will share them with the Chief for follow up.

THANK YOU for the increased police presence around Jordan Bank during school hours. Since my 1/25 post, I have seen officers in the area almost every day and it has most certainly helped! Thank you so much for your attention to residents' concerns! It's great to live somewhere our mayor and police respond to our concerns. Thanks again!

Hi, I would like to say that I think we have a great bunch of officers working here in the city. There have been dispatches to my house a few times 1- because of a 911 call received that they thought came from my house but had something to do with an internet phone number attached to my address and the second time because my then 3 year old somehow triggered the silent alarm (I don't even know how to do that). Both times they were very nice and came inside to make sure everything was ok (even though they were false alarms) and to make sure everyone was safe. They drive through my neighborhood and always stop to say "hi" to my son who now they know on a first name basis.

I have a question/suggestion. Today there was an incident in town. I am not going to go into it because I know you are aware of what I am talking about and don't want to take up much space.

Why doesn't your police department let the citizens of this town know what is going on? Is this something you might think about in the future? Posting something on your page describing major events like this so we don't have to read about somewhere else. The only website that covered this was the Daily Local and they printed incorrect information. At 1:40 pm they posted the fugitive was caught. Well I knew this not to be true because helicopters were still in the air and I have friends who live and work in the area that was being searched. I did my own research (calling the Oxford police and the State Police in Avondale) and found out the fugitive had NOT been caught. I then called the Daily Local and told them that they had their facts wrong. Everyone in town was getting their info from this website. I don't think that I had to get the correct info and have them change their story (which they did 10 mins after my phone call to them) what if people thought he was caught and let their children play in that area? I think it would have been better to get the correct information from our police department. The first thing I did when I heard about this was go to your website and found nothing so I had to rely on the Daily Local's info which I proved to be wrong. Is this something that can be done in the future so we are getting correct info from the police? Just a thought. I had many people say that they couldn't find any info here. It was very scary hearing helicopters, kids on lockdown and not getting proper info. Thanks for listening

Geoff Henry said...

Thank you for your post. We can surely add info to our website and Facebook page. Also you can register for updates from the OPD by going to www.nixle.com

A lot of towns are coming out with email alerts to its residents regarding public safety. Looking at crimes trends and such. Do we have this? If not, what would it take to get it started?

Geoff Henry said...

We do have a mechanism. It is Nixle. You can register at www.nixle.com. Sign up to receive alerts from Oxford PA Police Department.

I am writing regarding just two of the many issues at 741 Risinghurst Lane in Sycamore Crossing. This is the property that closely resembles a junk yard.
1) The hoarder who resides there host regular yard sales. She feels it necessary to post dozens of homemade yard sale signs all over the borough. It is embarrassing to be associated in any way with this type of activity. The worst part of this is that she will leave the signs up until they rot and fall apart. Isn't this littering? I am asking that the police department fine this lady for littering and hopefully this will make the development a nicer place.

2) I read in the paper that she has asked permission to keep chickens on her property. These chickens are constantly in the middle of the street and never on her property. She mentioned having a petition from neighbors, which is a total lie. No one in the development wants a zoo and we can provide an accurate petition if needed. Thanks for any help

Anonymous said...

I have to agree with the above poster about 741 Risinghurst Lane in Oxford. Even if the police don't want to or can't get involved with her mess of a home, please fine her for the dozens of yard sale signs left all over town to rot.

Do you know when you will be hiring again fo police officers?

Geoff Henry said...

We are taking applications for PT officers.

Oxford is a nice small town, but WHY can't something be done about the crack being sold at 106 N Third Street?? That guy has people coming and going at all hours of the day and night. IS that area of Oxford the main area for drugs??? I have seen the tennis shoes hanging from the telephone lines...what a shame one bad apple!

Geoff Henry said...

Thank you for the information. If you have more specific information, it can be submitted through the Anonymous Tip Link on the Police Departments web page.
