I think skateboarding should be prohibited.

I think the kids should be allowed to skateboard. It would be nice to have a designated area for them, too.

Skateboarding is allowed on side walks other than the central business district. It is also permitted on the paths in Memorial Park. With written permission it is allowed on private property. Council is working towards providing more public parks to allow for all types of activities.

I'm really glad to see that skateboarding was not prohibited with the new ordinance. As long as skateboarders are not interfering with traffic or causing damage, it adds a certain amount of character to our town to have kids being active and not simply sitting on the curbs and door steps. I think it would be a good thing to support cycling and skateboarding. Also, complete prohibition often results in an us-against-them sentiment between kids and the police which can really damage efforts to promote a sense of community.

i wish that the people aginst skateboarding had more reasoning behind their actions, yes skatboaders have done bad things, but thats all teenages of any age, race, or social group.yes skatboarders talk back sometimes but imagine doing somthing you love and being harassed for it by random people all day it would make you just as mad.what us skaters are trying to do isn't much different then gay rights or black rights activist, maybe not as important but we are just trying to live our lifes the way that makes us happy,so before yelling at us maybe do some reseach on what skatboarding really is about.

Thank you for your comment. I believe that people are not anti skateboarding. They are concerned about safety and damage that may be done to property and skateboarders not compling with the ordinance.

i'm from Oxford originally but haven't lived there for 8 years. Its funny to see that there's still this skateboarding issue coming up. The new Ordinance makes it nearly impossible for young people to enjoy themselves while skateboarding. In the ordinance it states that "No person shall indulge of engage in a trick or unsafe riding". Yes, "Tricks" are potentially unsafe but they are the essence of skateboarding.
I believe Oxford needs to provide a facility for skateboarders, neighboring towns such as Quarryville have provided skateparks for their youth. If your town doesn't have a skatepark, your town is a skatepark. So whats wrong with Oxford that it can't provide a facility? i think there are too many people with mentalities such as the one just below my comment.

Thank you for your comment. I will forward it to the Borough Manager and Council President.

where can we skate

Geoff Henry said...

You can skate on sidewalks in the Borough other than in the central business district. You can also skate on private property with written permission from the owner.

Why did I get told that I could not skateboard down a residential street/side walk a few days ago? The police officer told me I could not even skateboard back to my home? I think it's time to stop discouraging the youth from their passions. All that this town seems to encourage is expansion. Subdividing all of the natural land and farming land for the banks to give out bad loans. Corporations are coming in taking business from downtown. At the same time the sidewalk on the main business street will be tore up for months. I would love to see this community come together and rise above the apathy and make some change. It starts with empowering ourselves, then empowering the youth. Love yourselves and your family and your friends and your enemies. Do what you can to sustain yourselves. It's time We The People realized our potential and take back our power, freedom, and wealth which is by no means material. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to give my opinion.

Thank you for your post Zachary. Actually skateboarding is permitted on residential side walks other than in the Central Business District. I will share your comments with the Chief and Borough Council.

I believe that skateboarding is a right of passage, just as I feel being able to drive down a street without the obstruction of a skateboarder refusing to get out of the street in front of me. This should be a violation as it is in most communities in the area. The appropriate term is Obstruction of Traffic, a violation that may be accompanied by a fine. This can also apply to those who decide to walk down the middle of the street as an individual or group instead of using the sidewalks. I also understand that not all streets in the borough are equipped with sidewalks but common sence of walking/skateboarding to the side should be used.
Yes we need an area in Oxford to accomidate the needs of youth, but a respect of others rights and property must also be presented too. How else are our taxes going to pay for your area? Most skateboarders in the community are not taxpayers yet, but it is the taxpayer that must "understand" the mentality of the skateboarder first. This is a cart before the horse mentality. When the individuals understand the financial aspect to providing areas and prove their intent is geniune, then I, as a taxpayer will provide more support to their cause. Thank you for providing a format to express concerns

I'm glad to see that there is an actual ordinance for skateboarding in effect. It's about time!!!

The teen population needs more activities to do in town!! All of us know what boredom leads to.....

I believe if you allow someone to skateboard on public passageways that you are opening up the Borough for civil liabilty.

Take for example a young adult is skateboarding and hits a crack in the sidewalk then that young adult can claim that the crack in the sidewalk caused the injury and bi-proxy the borough has cause the injury and must pay for the medical costs. Just something to think about before posting that someone can skateboard.

If private donations are obtained for a skate park that would be acceptable as long as the subject using the park and their parents (if applicable) sign a waiver.

Thank you for your comment. I encourage you to attend the next Borough Council meeting and address the issue.

I think skateboarders should be able to skate baord beacuse if you kick them out of the pasrk and off the streets they will have no other place yo skateboard. If you do noth want them on the street start afund raiser to make a skate park. To raise money you could have a compotiton for skateboarding
to enter you pay money asd to watch you pay money.

We have been in town for a year now , and love it here however I've heard nothing but talk about a park, skate zone, outdoor hockey rinks...aparently this talk is exactly that "talk" no action according to many memebers of the community. If oxford wants to be on the map and known for its family atmosphere...you almost need to create a large community center with a gym to promote healthy lifesystles for kids and adults, here's the deal to join you have to pay oxford homeowner taxes or live in a home of tax payor. Once you open two or three outdoor hockey rinks all the sudden teams are created, even adult teams...I know 12 guys now in Oxford in their 30-40 all professionals who are looking to start a league but we cant even do that! Anyhow you create a 2-mile bike path or walking trail, have a picnic area and play area where the toddlers can play and a skate park all in one....skating is healthy, kids should be active, no skating on side walks but at this community skate park/ family recreational center if you will...this will also bring in new home buyers because they will see what a great family community this is....more tax dollars for the city and possibly bring new business to the area as well. Hell can even add a mini outdoor stage for summer concerts and amish bake events...look up riverwinds in West Deptford New Jersey, they did exactly this however on a much larger scale, they have fine dinning restaurants overlooking the Philly airport so you can watch the planes take off and land etc....now again we dont need all that but kids around here like to skate, build some ramps and outdoor hockey rinks. Hockey seem to be big here, all the kids play inthe street here another reason we need something....raise taxes slightly collect interest on the tax dollars over time city take out a mortage or loan and we pay it back over time. Why cant that be done?

Thank you for your comments. Perhaps you should attend a council meeting and OARA to share your views and suggestions on how to fund and accomplish your ideas.

I feel that skateboarding on the sidewalks and streets is causing real safety issues for both motorists and pedestrians, not to mention the skateboarder. There seems to be a misunderstanding that someone walking down the street, skateboarding, riding bikes, scooters, and large groups of kids gathering standing idle while a motorist tries to navigate thru and the kids don't want to move, causing the motorist to come to a stop in the middle of a roadway. The kids don't want to move out of the way, yell at motorist coming by, rude to the seniors walking in town, darting out in the road. I feel our police should be enforcing the laws set forth by the borough. As a community, we need to provide a place for our children to have a safe place to do such activities. Our streets and sidewalks just is not the answer.

Geoff Henry said...

Thank you anonymous. Can you be more specific as to where skateboarding is occurring including times?

I was wondering if skateboarding was allowed in the school parking lots during the summer when no one is there?

Geoff Henry said...

Bob
That is a question to ask the school district.
